A letter to my future children, in which I reflect my past through looking at how the release of my original film about racist traditions in my former youth camp was prevented due to white fragility.

Synopsis

Synopsis: ‘my past, not your future’ is a short documentary about dealing with racist camp traditions. Filmmaker Johannes Krug takes the audience on a journey of self-reflection through a very personal narrative. The focus is on coming to terms with one’s own role in passing on racist traditions in the Upper Swabian altar servers’ camp. An appeal to deal with one’s racist socialization.

About

In this personal documentary, I reflect on me facing racist traditions and white fragility in my former christian youth camp in rural Germany. 2019 I made a documentary about racist traditions and questionable rituals in the altar servers camp of my former church, where I used to go as a child and a teenager. When I wanted to publish the film in 2020, I faced white fragility by some of the protagonists and their concerned parents, who wanted to prevent me from making the film public. Within a few days, I had to re-edit the whole documentary and focus on my own personal story by cutting out all the other protagonists and giving the film a new storyline in the form of a letter to my future children.
